The first ride I ever experienced at Busch Gardens Tampa is about to take its final bow. After more than 44 years of delivering thrills, Scorpion, one of the park’s iconic roller coasters, will be retired on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay announced the closure on its social media channels, inviting fans to take one last ride before the coaster’s final run.

The Scorpion, a beloved fixture of Busch Gardens Tampa since its debut in 1980, is one of only three remaining roller coasters of its kind in the world. Manufactured by Anton Schwarzkopf and designed by Werner Stengel, this Silver Arrow model has left an indelible mark on coaster enthusiasts with its tight 360-degree loop and dizzying speeds of up to 41 miles per hour. The ride’s compact, yet intense layout has made it a fan favorite for decades, offering a bite-sized thrill that’s packed with punch.

A ride on Scorpion begins with a steady climb up its 60-foot lift hill, followed by a swift plunge that propels riders into the coaster’s signature loop. The 39-foot vertical loop is the heart of the ride, delivering a rush of adrenaline as it subjects riders to 3.5 g-forces. From there, the train dives into a series of twisting helixes before hitting the final brake run, completing the ride in just about a minute and a half.

For many, including myself, Scorpion holds a special place in the heart. As mentioned, it was the first coaster I ever rode at Busch Gardens Tampa back in 1996, and its thrilling, yet approachable design made it the perfect introduction to the world of roller coasters for many. The thought of its retirement brings a wave of nostalgia, yet it also sparks excitement for what the future holds.

Busch Gardens Tampa has hinted that Scorpion’s retirement will make way for new thrills, continuing the park’s legacy of innovation and excitement. While it’s sad to say goodbye, the advance notice from the park allows fans to celebrate Scorpion’s legacy with a final ride, paying homage to the coaster that has delighted generations of thrill-seekers.

As the countdown to Scorpion’s last run begins, fans of this classic coaster will make their way to Busch Gardens Tampa for one final ride. Though it’s hard to imagine the park without Scorpion’s iconic red, orange, and yellow trains racing along their track, the promise of new adventures to come is an exciting prospect.

Farewell, Scorpion – your sting will be missed, but your legacy will live on in the memories of all who have dared to ride.
