As fall 2025 winds down, readers had plenty to talk about for this week’s TPBD Mailbag — from Disney’s massive Fourth of July plans for America’s 250th anniversary to Dollywood’s latest coaster closure, Six Flags’ potential next thrill, and even what I enjoy writing about more: hockey or theme parks. This week’s questions touch on nostalgia, excitement, and a little personal reflection.
Let’s dive in and see what TPBD readers had on their minds this week.
Disney’s Big Birthday Bash — and What It Means for Kings Island
Stephanie — Dayton, OH:
With Disney planning its “Celebrate America — A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky” fireworks show for 2026 to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, do you think Kings Island will do something similar?
That’s a big deal at Disney Parks — the celebration will even be broadcast across ABC, Disney+, ESPN, Hulu, Freeform, FX, and National Geographic. I don’t expect Kings Island to go that big, but the park will likely keep its long-standing Fourth of July fireworks tradition alive. It’s a hometown favorite and the perfect way for local guests to celebrate the holiday close to home.
Dollywood’s Mystery Mine Set for a Tune-Up
Shane — Corbin, KY:
What’s going on with Mystery Mine at Dollywood? I heard it’s closing.
That’s right — Dollywood’s fan-favorite Mystery Mine coaster will close at the end of the Harvest Festival for behind-the-scenes updates. The good news? It’s not gone for good. Mystery Mine will reopen in 2026, giving fans plenty of reason to come back and see what’s new.
Is a Big New Thrill Coming to Six Flags Magic Mountain?
Esteban — San Diego, CA:
Hey Don, I saw that Six Flags Magic Mountain recently sent out a survey asking fans about potential new rides. Do you think this means a big addition is coming soon?
Magic Mountain’s guest survey definitely has fans buzzing — especially with the ride ideas being floated. Options like a multi-inversion launch coaster, story-driven dark ride, dueling water coaster, and several flat rides show the park’s looking at something significant.
While surveys don’t always guarantee what’s next, they often reveal what’s seriously being considered. And with Magic Mountain already holding one of the world’s largest coaster collections, adding something unique like a dueling water coaster or dark ride would bring fresh variety. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see what makes the final cut.
Writing Passions: Hockey vs. Theme Parks
Gary — Indianapolis, IN:
You write a lot about hockey on your social channels, and I really enjoy reading it. Your passion for the sport really comes through. Do you enjoy writing about hockey or theme parks more?
I enjoy writing about hockey more. It’s my favorite sport — I grew up playing it and spent 18 years working in professional hockey, one year longer than my time at Kings Island. There’s a certain emotion in the game that’s fun to capture in writing, especially when telling stories about players, teams, and fans.
That said, I still love writing about theme parks — especially when it comes to the history, design, and behind-the-scenes details that bring out people’s memories. Both communities have passionate fans, but if I had to choose, hockey would win out.
Six Flags Over Georgia Salutes Real-Life Heroes
Stan — Knoxville, TN:
What do you think about Six Flags Over Georgia introducing DC Heroes Fest this November? It sounds like a cool mix of comic book fun and honoring real-life heroes.
I think it’s a fantastic idea. It’s a clever way to wrap up the season by combining Six Flags’ DC theming with a heartfelt tribute to community heroes. The event’s mix of character meet-and-greets, live entertainment, and recognition for real-world heroes gives it extra meaning — and it’s great to see the park closing out the year on such a positive note.
Life After Kings Island
Michael — West Chester, OH:
Don, do you ever miss working at Kings Island?
No, I don’t. I’ve really enjoyed this next chapter — covering theme parks and travel as a journalist, co-hosting the Tower Topics podcast, doing freelance PR and consulting work, and spending my 21st season with the Cincinnati Bengals game day media relations staff. It’s a full plate, and one that keeps me connected to the things I’m passionate about every day.
