Every visit to Six Flags Great America begins with a sight that captivates both first-time visitors and returning guests: the Columbia Carousel. Nestled among lush trees and overlooking a pristine reflecting pool, this iconic merry-go-round is more than just an attraction; it’s a masterpiece of amusement and theme park artistry.
The Columbia Carousel’s grandeur is evident from the moment you step through the front gate. Its sculpted gazebo-style structure, adorned with intricate artistic details, commands attention.

This double-decker carousel, one of the world’s largest, stands as a regal landmark with its ten stories of magic and charm. It’s a must-ride attraction, offering a unique experience for couples, families, and friends alike.
Constructed in 1976, the Columbia Carousel is home to 106 beautifully crafted horses, animals, and chariots. The two-story design allows for an immersive experience, whether you choose to ride on the lower or upper deck. More than a thousand lights illuminate its grand gazebo, creating a dazzling display, especially at night.

As a new wood carousel with fiberglass figures, the Columbia Carousel boasts 82 jumping horses, 6 standing horses, and 15 menagerie animals, including cats, deer, giraffes, lions, ostriches, pigs, rabbits, tigers, and zebras. The carousel also features three chariots, ensuring there’s a perfect ride for everyone.
The music accompanying your ride on the Columbia Carousel comes from a band organ, adding a nostalgic touch to the experience. The carousel has remained in its original location since its debut, standing tall as a testament to the timeless appeal of classic amusement and theme park attractions.

Visiting Six Flags Great America isn’t complete without a spin on the Columbia Carousel. Whether it’s your first time or a beloved tradition, this grand carousel continues to be a source of joy and cherished memories for all who ride it.
I recently visited the park specifically to experience the magic and history of this beautiful attraction myself, and it remains a highlight of my trips to Six Flags Great America.
