Disney has pulled back the curtain on the story that will welcome guests into Monstropolis, the first-ever land inspired by Pixar’s Monsters, Inc., coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Rather than simply recreating scenes from the beloved 2001 film, the new land will continue the story after the movie’s events, placing guests in the middle of a historic moment for the monster world.

The experience centers on H.U.M.A.N. Day, short for “Humans Understand Monsters Are Nice,” a citywide celebration marking the first official opening of Monstropolis to human visitors.

The storyline builds on one of the film’s most important discoveries: the realization by Sulley and Mike Wazowski that children’s laughter generates far more energy than screams. That breakthrough transformed the city’s power source and changed how monsters viewed the human world.

Now, according to Disney, that shift in perspective has led to a groundbreaking decision. For the first time, Monstropolis is preparing to welcome humans into the city.

To help make the transition possible, city leaders have created the Department of Human Relations, a newly established organization tasked with helping monsters and humans understand one another while preparing for this unprecedented cultural exchange.

Guests arriving in the land will become part of the H.U.M.A.N. Day festivities, exploring Monstropolis as monsters and humans celebrate their newfound friendship through laughter instead of fear.

Disney says the land will feature a fully realized version of Monstropolis filled with bustling streets, recognizable landmarks, and the businesses that keep the city running. While inspired by familiar locations from the film, the area will also expand the world beyond what audiences saw on screen.

Visitors can expect to encounter iconic destinations such as Harryhausen’s restaurant and the Glob Theater, helping bring the animated city to life in a way that feels both familiar and new.

Disney Imagineers have also revealed that Monstropolis will blend original storytelling with select facades inspired directly by the film, recreating the atmosphere of Mike and Sulley’s daily walk to work while introducing new locations and experiences unique to the theme park.

The result appears to be more than a movie-based land. Instead, Disney is creating an opportunity for guests to step into the next chapter of the Monsters, Inc. story, becoming some of the first humans ever invited to visit Monstropolis.

Additional details about the land, attractions, dining, and entertainment offerings will be announced at a later date.
