Blue ice cream may not be a staple at every amusement and theme park, but where it does appear, it tends to inspire cult followings. Two parks that have made it part of their identity are Kings Island in Mason, Ohio, and Holiday World in Santa Claus, Indiana. While both offer their own spin on the colorful soft-serve, one stands out as the clear favorite: Holiday World’s version, served at Udderly Blue Ice Cream in the park’s 4th of July section.

What sets it apart? For starters, Holiday World opts for a blue raspberry flavor, a bolder and more complex profile compared to the blueberry version found at Kings Island. The soft-serve is custard-like in texture—thicker and creamier than typical theme park fare—making each bite feel more indulgent.

Flavor alone isn’t the only factor. Holiday World also allows guests to customize their treat with a wider selection of toppings, something that adds a personal flair and elevates the overall experience. And visually, the ice cream’s vibrant blue hue perfectly complements the patriotic theme of its surroundings, reinforcing a sense of place that Kings Island’s offering lacks.

Kings Island’s version certainly has its fans, and it holds its own as a local tradition. But in my experience, its flavor can lean toward the milder side—sometimes even watery on a hot day—and it doesn’t offer the same creamy richness or themed cohesion.

Perhaps most importantly, context matters. At Holiday World, where soft drinks are free and the atmosphere feels more laid-back, the ice cream doesn’t just taste better—it feels better. It’s not just a snack break; it’s a moment of simple joy woven into the fabric of the visit.

Both parks offer blue ice cream, but only one delivers a version that tastes, looks, and feels like a must-have. For me, Holiday World’s blue ice cream is more than a novelty—it’s a highlight.
