A Kings Island classic is hitting a milestone this year. Shake, Rattle & Roll, the park’s Troika ride, is celebrating its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of whirling and twirling guests in the Coney Mall section of the park.
First introduced in 1975 along with the retired Zodiac as part of Kings Island’s effort to expand its flat ride collection, the attraction was originally named Troika after the ride model designed by Huss Rides of Bremen, Germany. Unlike many of Coney Mall’s early rides, which had origins at Cincinnati’s Coney Island, Troika was built specifically for Kings Island.
The ride’s design features three arms, each with rotating gondolas that tilt and spin in a synchronized motion, delivering a smooth yet thrilling experience for riders of all ages. Over the years, it has remained a staple of Kings Island’s lineup, outlasting many other flat rides introduced in the 1970s.
In a nod to the park’s evolving thematic direction, the ride was later renamed Shake, Rattle & Roll, embracing a rock ‘n’ roll-inspired identity that has only added to its nostalgic charm.
While similar Troika rides can be found at other Six Flags parks including Carowinds, California’s Great America, Cedar Point, Dorney Park, and Kings Dominion, Kings Island’s version stands out for both its longevity and dedicated following.
It remains one of the longest-operating flat rides at the park, continuing to spin new memories for longtime fans and first-time visitors alike.
Shake, Rattle & Roll isn’t the only attraction at Kings Island celebrating a milestone this year. White Water Canyon marks its 40th anniversary, Backlot Stunt Coaster celebrates 20 years, Boo Blasters on Boo Hill reaches 15, and both Franklin’s Flyers and Snoopy’s Space Buggies hit the 10-year mark. Meanwhile, Orion turns five.
