As an enthusiast of theme parks and historical attractions, I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing numerous rides across various parks. Among these, the Dollywood Express stands out as my absolute favorite at Dollywood and what I believe to be the best train ride in the theme park industry.
Dollywood’s commitment to authenticity and history shines through with its use of two genuine 2/8/2 Baldwin Steam Locomotives for the Dollywood Express. These magnificent engines, named “Klondike Katie” and “Cinderella,” were built by the Baldwin Manufacturing Company just outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1943 and 1939, respectively. Originally constructed for the U.S. Army, these engines played a significant role during World War II in Alaska, hauling troops and lumber.
“Klondike Katie,” engine number 192, and “Cinderella,” engine number 70, each carry a unique history. Today, they weigh 110 tons and can carry up to 550 passengers in seven cars. Every day, these engines consume two tons of coal and 4,000 gallons of water, demonstrating the immense power and dedication required to operate them.
The Dollywood Express offers a 30-minute journey every hour, regardless of weather conditions, taking visitors on a five-mile adventure through Dollywood. Passengers can enjoy views of Owens Farm, Rivertown Junction, Craftsman’s Valley, The Village, Country Fair, Showstreet, Jukebox Junction, and Timber Canyon. This ride has been a staple of the park since June 1, 1961, when it was known as Rebel Railroad, and has been enchanting guests as the Dollywood Express since May 1986.

Notably, the Dollywood Express has welcomed many celebrities and their families over the years and remains one of Dolly Parton’s favorite rides. Since 1992, the train has also become a cherished part of Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas festival, providing guests with a magical vantage point to view the park’s stunning light displays.
In a landscape of thrilling rides and attractions, the Dollywood Express offers a nostalgic and picturesque journey that is unparalleled. Its historical significance, combined with the enchanting views of Dollywood, makes it a must-ride for any visitor to the park.
