It’s hard to imagine that one of the world’s most celebrated theme parks began as a humble train ride through the Smoky Mountains. But hearing from Dolly Parton herself—her iconic voice ringing out with warmth and humor—it’s clear that Dollywood’s story is one of bold dreams, deep roots and unmatched heart.
I was among those in attendance Friday morning as Dolly returned to the park that bears her name, not only to honor Dollywood’s 40th season, but to reflect on a journey that began on May 3, 1986. What followed was an emotional, entertaining, and deeply personal celebration that reminded everyone in the audience exactly why Dollywood has become more than a theme park—it’s a treasured American institution.
Joined by Dollywood Parks & Resorts President Eugene Naughton, Herschend Family Entertainment co-founder Peter Herschend, and Dolly Parton Productions’ Ted Miller, Dolly recounted how the vision for Dollywood was born, and how it’s grown into one of the most awarded and beloved parks on the planet.

“I’ve always believed the Smoky Mountains are one of the most beautiful places God ever made,” Dolly told the crowd. “When I first dreamed of creating Dollywood, I had two simple hopes: I wanted people to fall in love with the Smokies and feel the kindness of the folks who call this place home.”
That sincerity echoed throughout the morning as park leadership shared their personal memories. Naughton, who described working with Dolly as “the opportunity of a lifetime,” praised her as a true visionary of the industry. “Her ability to create and inspire shows she really does need to be considered one of the greatest names in our industry.”
As part of the event, guests got an exclusive first look at Play On, a retrospective stage show that opened to the public this weekend. A touching cupcake handout—recalling Dolly’s famous photo on a giant birthday cake at the park’s first anniversary—was followed by access to a surprise gift: The Dollywood Collection: Celebrating 40 Years of Music & Memories, a new album of previously unreleased songs Dolly has written about the park. The album is now available to stream at dolly.lnk.to/Dollywood40thAlbum.
The day wasn’t just about reminiscing. Dolly also announced a meaningful new initiative: a partnership with the Tennessee Governor’s Faith-Based and Community Initiative and the Department of Children’s Services to offer children in foster care a one-time complimentary visit to Dollywood.
Dollywood’s heart has always been in its people, and Friday served as a love letter to the 4,000 hosts who help create what guests consistently rank as one of the best theme park experiences in the world. Thirteen of those employees have been with the park since day one—or close to it. That longevity and loyalty, Dolly said, are what keep people coming back year after year.
The accolades speak for themselves. Since 2022, Dollywood has been named Tripadvisor’s Best U.S. Theme Park twice, one of Forbes’ Best Midsize Employers, and received top honors from Amusement Today, USA Today, Southern Living and Travel + Leisure. Most notably, it’s been dubbed the #1 attraction in the world that guests most want to return to.

Following a record-breaking 2024 season, Dollywood is moving full steam ahead. This year brings the 25th anniversary of Dollywood’s Splash Country, the 10th anniversary of DreamMore Resort and Spa, and the 30th anniversary of Dolly’s Imagination Library, which has now gifted more than 270 million books worldwide. A brand-new 750-space parking lot and the just-opened Wilderness Pass Restaurant are the latest steps in the park’s $500 million, 10-year expansion plan.
Spring guests can currently enjoy the Flower & Food Festival, featuring towering Mosaiculture sculptures and vibrant seasonal cuisine. Summer follows with the Sweet Summer Nights drone and fireworks show, and live shows like Gazillion Bubble Show: Evolution and Chris Perondi’s Stunt Dog Experience. Fall brings the beloved Harvest Festival and Great Pumpkin LumiNights, while the year wraps with Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas, renowned for its six million lights and festive atmosphere.
Walking through the park Friday—flowers in bloom, cupcakes in hand, and Dolly’s songs drifting through the air—it was easy to see why Dollywood continues to shine. This park is more than thrill rides and funnel cakes. It’s a testament to dreams pursued, communities uplifted, and the enduring magic of Dolly Parton.
After four decades, Dollywood isn’t just playing on—it’s playing to win.
