There are bigger, faster and more technologically advanced attractions at Dollywood, but there’s one ride I make a point of experiencing whenever I visit the Smoky Mountain theme park: Blazing Fury.
Originally opened in 1978, Blazing Fury is Dollywood’s longest-operating roller coaster and one of the attractions that gives the park so much of its character. Part dark ride, part roller coaster, it sends guests into an 1880s mountain town where a raging fire has thrown everything into chaos.
Riders climb aboard vehicles styled like vintage fire engines and encounter firefighters, gunslingers, damsels in distress and other colorful townspeople while trying to escape the blaze. Much of the attraction unfolds at a dark-ride pace before three sudden, gravity-driven drops provide the thrills.
For me, Blazing Fury isn’t just something to ride between Dollywood’s bigger coasters. It’s an essential part of a day at the park.
Here are five reasons I love Blazing Fury — and why I think it belongs on every Dollywood visitor’s must-do list.
1. It tells a story instead of just taking you for a ride
Storytelling is a big part of what separates Dollywood from many other theme parks, and Blazing Fury is one of the best examples.
From the moment you enter the burning mountain town, there’s something happening around you. Animatronic firefighters scramble to battle the flames while gunslingers, townspeople and other characters add humor and personality to the unfolding disaster.
You aren’t simply waiting for the next drop. You’re traveling through a story.
That combination of themed scenes and coaster elements was unusual when Blazing Fury opened, and nearly five decades later, it remains one of the attraction’s greatest strengths.
2. It’s a piece of Dollywood history you can still experience
New attractions understandably receive much of the attention at theme parks, but classics matter, too.
For longtime visitors, stepping aboard can bring back memories of trips from years or even decades ago. For first-time guests, it’s an opportunity to experience an important piece of the park’s history rather than simply read about it.
That’s something I appreciate more with every visit.
Dollywood has changed tremendously since Blazing Fury opened, but this quirky indoor coaster remains, connecting the park of today with an earlier chapter of its story.
3. The three drops still get me
Blazing Fury spends much of its running time behaving like a traditional dark ride. That’s what makes the coaster portions so much fun.
You become absorbed in the scenes and characters before the attraction suddenly reminds you that you’re riding a roller coaster.
Its three gravity-driven drops aren’t enormous by modern coaster standards, but they don’t need to be. Darkness, timing and surprise make them effective, especially for someone experiencing Blazing Fury for the first time without knowing what’s coming.
I’ve ridden much taller and faster roller coasters, but those drops are still one of my favorite parts of Blazing Fury.
4. Dollywood knows how to preserve a classic
Keeping an attraction from 1978 operating takes more than nostalgia.
Dollywood has continued investing in Blazing Fury while resisting the temptation to turn it into something completely different. Recent refreshment work brought new costumes for characters, updated signage, replacement sections of track and a completely rebuilt waterfall scene.
Most importantly, it still feels like Blazing Fury.
That’s the balance Dollywood gets right. The park can improve and maintain an aging attraction without polishing away the quirks and old-school charm that made people love it in the first place.
Blazing Fury doesn’t need to become a modern dark ride. It just needs to remain the best version of Blazing Fury it can be.
5. There simply isn’t another Blazing Fury
Blazing Fury doesn’t need to compete with Dollywood’s biggest thrill rides. That’s not its job.
It’s an indoor adventure through a burning 1880s mountain town, filled with vintage characters, old-school effects, humor, darkness and unexpected coaster drops.
You can find taller coasters elsewhere. You can find faster coasters elsewhere. You can find more technologically advanced dark rides elsewhere.
But you can’t duplicate the history, nostalgia and wonderfully quirky character that have accumulated inside Blazing Fury since 1978.
That makes it one of those attractions I would tell any first-time Dollywood visitor not to overlook.
Don’t skip Blazing Fury at Dollywood
It’s easy for first-time Dollywood visitors to build their day around the park’s biggest headliners. But make room for Blazing Fury.
Nearly five decades after it opened, there still isn’t anything quite like it. The next time you hear that familiar warning — “Fire in the hole!” — climb aboard.
Some attractions are worth riding because they’re new.
Blazing Fury is worth riding because it has endured.
