There’s a new reason to head to the heartland—one that’s officially earned a spot on my coaster bucket list.

Have you ridden the Midwest’s first single-rail roller coaster yet? I haven’t. But I hope to soon. Fire Runner made its long-awaited debut at Lost Island Themepark in Waterloo, Iowa, on July 18, 2025—and it’s already turning heads in the coaster community.

Manufactured by Rocky Mountain Construction, Fire Runner features a 1,950-foot-long track, three inversions, and reaches speeds up to 52 mph. The ride uses RMC’s Raptor single-rail technology, allowing for a smoother and more intense ride experience.

Riders are seated inline, straddling a single rail, which provides a closer connection to the track and amplifies every twist, turn, and drop.

The roller coaster completes its course in just 32 seconds and includes a dive loop and a series of airtime hills and barrel rolls. Its 12-car trains are longer than earlier Raptor models, increasing the ride’s capacity while preserving its high-thrill design.

Fire Runner has a height requirement of 48 inches, making it accessible to a wider range of guests, including younger thrill-seekers.

For me, what really pushes Fire Runner onto my must-ride list is where it lives. Lost Island Themepark may be tucked away in Iowa, but it’s quickly gaining a reputation as a “diamond in the rough.” The park pairs Fire Runner with the Intamin launch coaster Matugani and the immersive Volkanu dark ride for a trio that’s catching the attention of enthusiasts nationwide.

The buzz is real. Posts on Reddit and X (formerly Twitter) praise are lighting up with praise for the ride’s pacing, powerful airtime, and longer trains—12 cars compared to earlier Raptors’ 10. It was also recently named one of Coaster Studios’ Top 25 New Coasters for 2025.

They built it. Now I must come.

Fire Runner isn’t just the park’s first major addition since opening—it’s a turning point. A signal that Lost Island Themepark isn’t playing it safe. They’re investing in world-class thrills, and coaster fans are taking notice.

If you’re planning your next summer trip and want something fresh, intense, and off the beaten path, Fire Runner at Lost Island Themepark should be on your radar—and, if you’re like me, firmly on your bucket list.

Pro tip from the pros: Ride in the back for the most insane airtime.

See you in Waterloo.
