In 1979, The Beast made its debut at Kings Island, sending shockwaves through the roller coaster world. It set unprecedented records as the longest, fastest, and most thrilling ride globally, luring thrill-seekers to uncharted territories of excitement and adrenaline.

Roller coaster aficionados worldwide, including members of the American Coaster Enthusiasts (ACE), flocked to Kings Island to experience the unparalleled thrill of The Beast. During the park’s first five weekends in 1979, over 100 ACE members, hailing from as far as California, Florida, Georgia, New York, Texas, and Europe sought to conquer The Beast. ACE members from cities of Kings Island like Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, and Pittsburgh became weekend regulars. This phenomenon caught the attention of Ruth Voss, Kings Island’s public relations manager at the time.

Battling arthritis, Ruth found solace in her daily ride on The Beast, which alleviated her stiff joints. Inspired, she initiated the first ACE Walk Back on May 19, 1979, marking the birth of a new Kings Island tradition for roller coaster enthusiasts.

For the next 30 years, ACE members were welcomed by Kings Island’s PR team and Guest Services each operating day for the Walk Back. Meeting on International Street at 9:45 a.m., enthusiasts often enjoyed multiple rides before the park officially opened.

Joining the tradition in 1981, it provided me with not only first rides of the day on the world’s longest wooden roller coaster, but also an opportunity to forge friendships with countless ACE members, sharing stories of roller coaster adventures and the love for Kings Island attractions.

Assuming the role of PR area manager at Kings Island in 2007, I embraced overseeing Ruth’s cherished tradition. In 2008, over 300 ACE members representing 38 states, Canada, and Europe participated, showcasing the enduring excitement of being among the first to ride The Beast. However, after 30 seasons, the Walk Back concluded in 2009 due to the introduction of Early Ride Time for Gold season passholders. Change is inevitable, as they say.

The ACE 2024 Spring Conference at Kings Island on May 17-19 will mark the 45th anniversary of The Beast Walk Back, providing an intriguing prospect for how the Kings Island Team will commemorate the retired tradition.

ACE remains the largest ride enthusiast organization in the world, boasting educated, dedicated, and passionate members. Their extensive activities include award-winning publications, action-packed events, and preservation efforts. To learn more about ACE, visit the club’s official website.
