The world-famous Santa Claus Post Office has begun offering its special holiday postmark for 2024. Available only in Santa Claus, Indiana, this unique cancellation has become a beloved tradition for the small town, which is the only one in the world with the Santa Claus name.
Every December, the post office handles over 400,000 pieces of mail, many sent by visitors eager to share the spirit of the season. The special postmark, which debuted in 1983, is redesigned annually by a local high school student, adding a creative and personal touch to holiday cards and letters.
This year’s postmark is available on working days through Dec. 24. To obtain the postmark, customers can follow specific guidelines provided by the Santa Claus Post Office:
- Allow at least a 2-inch by 4-inch space in the stamp area for the picture postmark.
- Apply postage to cards or letters before bringing or mailing them to the post office;
- If you wish to mail Christmas cards to the post office, package them – with postage stamps already on them – in a sturdy envelope or box, and mail to: Postmaster, P.O. Box 9998, Santa Claus, IN 47579-9998;
- The picture postmark is available on working days now through 24, 2024.
- The picture postmark must be requested by the postal customer.
- To ensure a good postmark imprint, do not enclose large or bulky items in your holiday mail (Ex: reindeer food, snowflakes, glitter, stickers, etc.).
- There is no charge for postmarking; however, there is a limit of 50 picture postmarks (hand cancellations) per person per day.
Santa Claus, Indiana, will also host its annual Christmas Celebration during the first three weekends of December. Festivities include the Santa Claus Christmas Parade, caroling at the Santa Claus Museum & Village, and the charming “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire” event at Santa’s Candy Castle.
