Kings Island’s Racer Undergoing Extensive Track Work

This month, Kings Island’s iconic wooden roller coaster, The Racer, has begun undergoing extensive track work, with approximately 1,000 feet of track on the north side being replaced. This ambitious project involves the use of engineered precut wood track from The Gravity Group, the masterminds behind recent updates on The Beast and previous enhancements to The Racer.

Unlike traditional construction methods that involve hand-cutting track onsite, The Gravity Group’s alternative track system is both economical and more precise. The new precut track is designed to be up to thirty times stronger than its traditional counterpart, offering additional strength and a precise shape that ensures smooth rides and easy maintenance. This innovative approach involves precision CNC equipment at The Gravity Group’s facility, where the track is cut to the exact specifications determined by the ride design.

Guests have expressed enthusiasm for the enhanced ride experience delivered by The Racer over the past two years, thanks to the engineered precut track. Despite other roller coasters now garnering more attention at Kings Island, The Racer holds a special place in the park’s history.

The Racer’s significance dates back to 1972 when Kings Island first opened, becoming the star attraction and the most talked-about ride in America. It played a pivotal role in sparking a “second golden age” of roller coasters, revitalizing interest in wooden roller coasters that had been in decline since the Great Depression.

Before The Racer, hundreds of roller coasters built between 1890 and 1930 had met the fate of the wrecking ball. By 1965, only about 200 of the 2,000 roller coasters built through the 1920s remained in operation. The Racer’s instant popularity led to a roller coaster renaissance that continues to thrive over half a century later.

The Racer’s impact extended beyond Kings Island, influencing the creation of other high-capacity racing coasters like Racer 75 at Kings Dominion and Gemini at Cedar Point. It also became the setting for world-record riding attempts by yours truly and gained pop culture recognition through its appearance on an episode of “The Brady Bunch” in 1973.

Beyond its undeniable historical significance, The Racer has given more than 109 million rides, making it the most-ridden attraction in Kings Island’s history. With its red, white, and blue color scheme and unique design as a twin-tracked, out-and-back racing coaster, The Racer is visually stunning.

Lastly, for many, The Racer holds a special place in their hearts, evoking memories of shared experiences with family and friends. As the coaster undergoes extensive track work, it continues to symbolize the spirit of innovation and excitement that defines the world of roller coasters, ensuring that future generations will create their own cherished memories aboard this iconic ride.
