Before The Beast roared to life in 1979, solidifying Kings Island’s reputation as a world-class destination, the park had already established itself as a gem of the Midwest. Between its grand opening in 1972 and The Beast’s debut, Kings Island offered visitors a mix of thrilling rides, immersive themed areas, and a touch of European elegance. It was a place that blended family fun with a growing reputation for innovation, setting the stage for what was to come.
International Street: A Grand Entrance

Visitors were greeted by International Street, a stunning European-inspired boulevard that led to the park’s iconic centerpiece: the Eiffel Tower. Standing at 330 feet, the tower was a marvel of its time, offering breathtaking views of the park and beyond. The Royal Fountain, stretching longer than a football field, dazzled guests with its choreographed water displays and vibrant lights at night.
Flanking the boulevard were themed buildings representing Italy, Spain, France, Switzerland, and Germany. Each building housed shops and eateries that transported guests to far-off lands, from a plush toy shop in the Italian section to the Sausage Haus in the Swiss building. Adding to the charm were artists creating caricatures, face paintings, and portraits under the shadow of the tower.
Oktoberfest: Bavarian Charm

Oktoberfest brought the festive spirit of Bavaria to the Midwest. The Haufbrauhaus Bier Garten served German-inspired dishes, beers, and soft drinks, accompanied by traditional “oom-pah-pah” music. Rides like the Bayern Kurve and Flying Dutchman added thrills, while the Sky Ride offered picturesque views as it ferried guests to other parts of the park.
Wild Animal Safari: A Roaring Success

From 1974 to 1978, the Wild Animal Safari allowed guests to experience an African-style adventure. Over 250 animals roamed the 100-acre preserve, viewed from air-conditioned monorails. Highlights included lions, giraffes, and, by 1978, the addition of penguins and exotic birds. The Screamin’ Demon, a forward-and-backward looping coaster, added an extra thrill to the safari experience.
Coney Island: A Nod to the Past

Paying homage to its predecessor, Coney Island, Kings Island recreated the charm of turn-of-the-century amusement parks. The Racer, a groundbreaking twin wooden roller coaster, was the area’s crown jewel, drawing coaster enthusiasts with its side-by-side racing trains. The area also featured nostalgic flat rides like Shake, Rattle & Roll and Flying Scooters, as well as a vibrant midway packed with games and classic fare like funnel cakes and corn dogs.
Rivertown: A Rustic Escape

Rivertown celebrated Ohio’s riverboat history with attractions like the Kings Island & Miami Valley Railroad, which took guests on a mile-long journey through scenes of the Wild West. The Kenton’s Cove Keelboat Canal and Kings Mills Log Flume brought watery adventures, while the Powder Valley Nature Trail offered a peaceful woodland escape. The Salt Water Circus, with its lively dolphin show, was a fan favorite.
The Happy Land of Hanna-Barbera: A Child’s Dream

For younger guests, The Happy Land of Hanna-Barbera was a whimsical wonderland where cartoon characters like Scooby-Doo and Yogi Bear came to life. The area featured family-friendly rides like The Enchanted Voyage and the Scooby-Doo coaster, along with dining options tailored to kids. It was a haven of laughter and imagination.
The Park’s Pre-Beast Legacy
Kings Island was a vibrant park even before The Beast put it on the map. Its blend of themed entertainment, innovative rides, and family-friendly attractions created a beloved destination for millions. By 1978, the park had already earned a reputation for excellence, setting the stage for the next chapter in its history.
When The Beast debuted in 1979, it propelled Kings Island into the spotlight as a must-visit destination for coaster enthusiasts worldwide. But those early years, with their charm and character, laid the foundation for what would become one of the most iconic amusement parks in the world.
