Dollywood just gave theme-park fans an early Christmas present.

As anticipation builds for NightFlight Expedition, the most ambitious new attraction in Dollywood Parks & Resorts history, the park unveiled one of its futuristic ride vehicles at the IAAPA Expo 2025 in Orlando. Industry insiders and attendees at the massive expo were the first to see the custom-designed amphibious vehicle that will transport guests on a never-before-seen Smoky Mountain adventure when the attraction opens in Spring 2026.

And yes — it’s every bit as innovative as fans hoped.

The new vehicle, created by the award-winning team at MACK Rides, interacts with vivid multimedia projections, dynamic onboard and offboard audio, and special lighting effects to fully immerse guests in the experience. The technology is already drawing praise: MACK Rides earned the 2025 Amusement Today Golden Ticket Award for Best New Innovation specifically for the ride system developed for NightFlight Expedition.

Four Ride Experiences in One Groundbreaking Attraction

At more than $50 million, NightFlight Expedition is the largest single attraction investment in Dollywood’s history — and for good reason. The ride brings together four distinct adventures inside a 44,000-square-foot, climate-controlled show building in the park’s Wildwood Grove area.

Billed as the world’s first indoor family hybrid coaster and whitewater river raft ride, the attraction blends thrills, storytelling, and state-of-the-art effects into one seamless, 5.5-minute journey. Guests will:

  • Soar over the Smokies on a magical nighttime flight
  • Navigate a high-speed whitewater rafting adventure through 500,000 gallons of rushing water
  • Traverse a rugged mountain ridge aboard a coaster
  • Glide across a mysterious glowing lake aboard a boat

It’s all part of a search for Secret Lake, the hidden water source said to power the dazzling canopy of Wildwood Grove’s beloved Wildwood Tree.

A Story Rooted in Smoky Mountain Magic

In true Dollywood fashion, NightFlight Expedition is driven by storytelling. Guests join twin scientists Cora and Jasper Oakley, the niece and nephew of Wildwood Grove explorer Ned Oakley, as they hunt for bioluminescence deep within the Great Smoky Mountains. The siblings have invented a device called the Bioluminator, which they’ve mounted to their family’s one-of-a-kind amphibious aircraft — the very vehicle showcased at IAAPA.

The goal? Illuminate the glowing roots of the Wildwood Tree and follow them to Secret Lake.

Dollywood Celebrates a Big Industry Moment

For Dollywood, the debut of the ride vehicle was more than a teaser — it was a milestone.

“We’re proud to unveil this revolutionary ride vehicle today,” said Eugene Naughton, President of Dollywood Parks & Resorts. “It truly represents the perfect blend between innovation and the authentic Smoky Mountain storytelling our guests expect. The excitement surrounding this new attraction continues to build and highlights our growing reputation as a destination known for hospitality, guest experience, and immersive adventures.”

MACK Rides CEO Christian von Elverfeldt echoed the enthusiasm.

“NightFlight Expedition is a milestone in immersive ride experiences,” he said. “The ride vehicle is not just a technical achievement — it’s a symbol of what’s possible when creativity and engineering come together to push the boundaries of what a theme park experience can be.”

How to Be Among the First to Ride

With so much buzz surrounding the attraction, travelers hoping to experience NightFlight Expedition next year may want to plan ahead. Dollywood offers four season pass levels — Diamond, Gold, Silver, and the Summer Fun Pass — plus the popular Pre-K Imagination Season Pass, which offers free admission for children born in 2021 or 2022.

Even better: Anyone who purchases a 2026 season pass can enjoy this year’s Smoky Mountain Christmas presented by Humana, giving families a holiday season of fun before NightFlight Expedition even opens.

The attraction is currently slated for Spring 2026, and Dollywood officials promise more surprises along the way.
