Busch Gardens Williamsburg, a beloved theme park in Virginia, marked an emotional goodbye this past weekend as they bid farewell to the iconic Loch Ness Monster roller coaster. The park is gearing up for an extensive renovation of this classic attraction in preparation for a grand reopening next spring. Dedicated pass members were given the special opportunity to savor one last ride during the farewell weekend, with some enthusiasts, like one pass member, managing to ride the Loch Ness an astonishing 14 times in a single day.

The Loch Ness Monster, a roller coaster that has been thrilling visitors since its grand opening in 1978, holds a special place in the hearts of many. However, the time for an exciting transformation has arrived. Busch Gardens unveiled their plans to enhance the coaster earlier this fall, and construction officially began on Monday.

The refurbished attraction, soon to be known as “The Loch Ness Monster: The Legend Lives On,” is set to make its triumphant return in the spring of 2024. While an exact reopening date remains a mystery, the theme park promises an enhanced experience for all. The renovations include the replacement of over 900 feet of steel track, introducing new themes and innovative effects. Notably, the legendary Loch Ness Monster, affectionately known as “Nessie,” will play a more prominent role throughout the ride. Visitors can also anticipate an enriched queue experience with added storytelling elements.

Kevin Lembke, president of Busch Gardens and Water Country USA, addressed the concerns of loyal fans during a recent town hall event, emphasizing the park’s commitment to the Loch Ness Monster. This coaster, celebrated for its distinction as the world’s first interlocking loop coaster, holds a special place in the theme park’s history. So much so that it has achieved the status of a registered landmark by the American Coaster Enthusiasts organization. Lembke reassured fans that while the ride is undergoing a transformation, all the beloved elements of the Loch Ness Monster, including its iconic loops and the 2018-upgraded trains, will remain intact.

The Loch Ness Monster’s rejuvenation is just one of the exciting developments Busch Gardens has in store for the next year. During the town hall event, Lembke offered a glimpse of what visitors can look forward to during the upcoming Christmas Town celebration. The annual Christmas event, starting on November 10 and running on select dates through January 7, promises to be extra special this year. For the first time, the park will keep five roller coasters operational, weather permitting, during the holiday season. Christmas Town will feature new meet-and-greet opportunities with seasonal characters, delightful food and beverage options, and new shows, including the return of the fan-favorite Gloria! after a hiatus since 2019.

In addition to the holiday festivities, Busch Gardens has plans to transform Squire’s Grille in England into an exciting new dining experience when it reopens in spring 2024. Similarly, the Catalina Grille Diner at Water Country USA is getting a makeover for the new season.

Looking ahead to 2024, Busch Gardens is set to unveil a new summer event running from June 14 through August 11. While details are scant for now, Lembke hinted that this event will capitalize on the park’s natural beauty, promising a unique summer experience for visitors.

Finally, 2024 will see Busch Gardens celebrating two significant milestones: the 25th anniversary of Howl-o-Scream and the 15th anniversary of Christmas Town. While the specifics of these celebrations remain under wraps, Lembke left audiences with the promise of a thrilling year ahead. “There are a lot of exciting times ahead for us,” he said, leaving visitors and fans eager to experience the wonders of Busch Gardens in the years to come.
