Luna Park is set to transport Sydney into an enchanting dream world, rekindling the city’s affection for its cherished heritage-listed amusement park.
Back in 1935, Luna Park Sydney was a beacon of entertainment during the bleak Depression Era, offering solace and escapism to a struggling populace. Fast forward to today, where escapism remains a precious commodity in turbulent times, yet the competition for people’s attention has never been fiercer. In response, Luna Park has embarked on a transformative journey, aiming to rekindle Sydney’s pride in this iconic theme park and establish itself as a global leader in experiential destinations.

Mark your calendars for December 22, 2023, when Luna Park will unveil ‘Dream Circus,’ a mesmerizing $15 million immersive adventure nestled within their existing 3,000 square meter Big Top structure, affectionately referred to as the ‘Magic Box.’
John Hughes, the CEO of Luna Park, and his team recognized the need to evolve beyond mere amusement rides. They took inspiration from today’s most popular attractions worldwide, such as Van Gogh Alive, The Museum of Ice Cream, and the WNDR Museum, which all focus on immersive, multi-sensory experiences. Initially considering the possibility of importing an experience, they decided to tap into Sydney’s pool of creative talent to craft their own locally developed, permanent attraction.
An elite squad of Sydney-based creatives and technicians, with a remarkable portfolio including Olympic Games Opening Ceremonies, Marvel films, Vivid Sydney, and award-winning location-based experiences, was assembled. Embracing Luna Park’s carnival motifs, they are crafting a whimsical universe within the Big Top. Adorable characters will guide visitors on a dreamy journey to the circus, the seaside, underwater realms, and beyond.

What sets ‘Dream Circus’ apart from other immersive shows like Van Gogh Alive and Frida Kahlo: Life of an Icon is its state-of-the-art construction. The Magic Box is designed as a cutting-edge theater set, featuring custom 360-degree projections, motion-activated LEDs, and hologram technology. Textured 3D walls and stages create a truly immersive experience, enhanced by a spatially mapped audio system that surrounds the audience, making them an integral part of the unfolding spectacle.
Luna Park’s Magic Box will continue to deliver immersive experiences, shows, performances, and events long after the Dream Circus season concludes. John Hughes stated, “We are proud to build for Sydney one of the most technically advanced environments in the country.” This multifunctional venue will host a variety of immersive experiences, unprecedented live music events, and special occasions, raising the bar for entertainment in the city.
Moreover, the Big Top site will serve as a training ground for Sydney’s future creatives and technologists. The state-of-the-art canvas will provide opportunities for skill development and vocational pathways, contributing to the growth of Australia’s immersive experience industry.

This new venture encapsulates Luna Park’s 1935 ethos of wonder, escapism, and joy, harmonizing the best of the old with the best of the new. Tickets for the Dream Circus experience is now available, offering an hour-long enchantment at $35 for children and $45 for adults. Be among the first in the world to experience this magical journey, starting December 22, at Luna Park Sydney’s Big Top.
