The Loch Ness Monster, affectionately known as “Nessie,” has been a fan-favorite since its grand opening in 1978. Now, after more than 40 years of thrilling riders, this legendary attraction is embarking on a major restoration project set to redefine the Loch Ness Monster experience in 2024.

The Loch Ness Monster has played an integral role in the history of Busch Gardens Williamsburg. Recognized as a landmark roller coaster by the American Coaster Enthusiasts, it has captured the hearts of riders young and old. Kevin Lembke, President of Busch Gardens Williamsburg and Water Country USA, expressed his excitement about the project in a press release, stating, “Loch Ness Monster has been a staple of our park since 1978. We are excited to continue Loch Ness Monster’s story in 2024 and beyond.”

The restoration project promises an array of thrilling new elements and immersive experiences for riders. When Nessie reopens in 2024, visitors can expect a fully restored experience, complete with dramatic storytelling and innovative effects. This iconic coaster will take riders on a journey through the picturesque Scottish terrain along Nessie’s signature steel track, featuring over 900 feet of all-new track.

But the enhancements don’t stop there. The queue line itself will feature captivating storytelling elements to set the stage for the adventure ahead. As riders ascend the lift hill, they will be enveloped by an all-new soundtrack created exclusively for the coaster, intensifying the anticipation. The first drop will offer riders a tantalizing glimpse of something monstrous lurking beneath the water’s surface. As the ride ventures into a dark tunnel, guests will come face-to-face with the monster in a shadowy cave lair, adding an extra layer of suspense and excitement.

A Farewell and a Fresh Start

Of course, such a significant transformation means that the Loch Ness Monster will need to temporarily bid farewell to its eager riders. The original ride experience will close to the public on Tuesday, Oct. 31, but Busch Gardens season passholders will have the exclusive opportunity to enjoy a “last to ride” access weekend Nov. 4-5. Season passholders will also be the first to experience the reimagined “Loch Ness Monster: The Legend Lives On” when it reopens in 2024.
