When it comes to Cedar Point, everyone has their favorite rides. Among my favorite attractions is the Cedar Downs Racing Derby.
This unique and historic ride isn’t just any carousel—it’s a racing derby that combines the charm of a classic ride with the excitement of a horse race.

A Ride with a Rich History
Cedar Downs Racing Derby is one of the largest racing derby rides built by Prior & Church in the early 1920s. Originally located at Euclid Beach Park near Cleveland, Ohio, it delighted visitors for 47 years before Cedar Point purchased it in 1967.
After moving it to Sandusky, Cedar Point restored the ride to its original condition. Today, Cedar Downs Racing Derby continues to delight thousands of guests annually, preserving a piece of amusement park history from Euclid Beach, which closed in 1969.
The Thrill of the Race
As soon as you step onto the Cedar Downs Racing Derby track, you know you’re in for a unique experience. This isn’t your typical carousel ride. Instead of simply going up and down, riders on the hand-carved horses experience a simulated race, complete with the excitement of jockeying for position.
The 64 horses move forward and backward as the carousel spins, creating the sensation of a real horse race. It’s a ride that keeps everyone on the edge of their saddles, quite literally.
Fun for Everyone
One of the best aspects of Cedar Downs Racing Derby is that it’s fun for all ages. Whether you’re a child experiencing the thrill for the first time or an adult reliving the nostalgia of carousels past, Cedar Downs Racing Derby offers an engaging and exciting ride.
The competitive element adds a layer of fun, as friends and family challenge each other to see who can “win” the race.
A Rare Experience
Cedar Downs Racing Derby is one of only two racing carousels in the United States, making it a rare and special attraction. This rarity enhances its appeal and makes it a must-ride when you’re at Cedar Point.
The craftsmanship of the hand-carved horses and the detailed restoration work make this ride not only exciting but also a beautiful piece of amusement park history.

Always a Photo Finish
Every race on Cedar Downs Racing Derby ends with a photo finish, ensuring smiles all around. The ride’s combination of history, craftsmanship, and exhilarating fun makes it stand out among Cedar Point’s many attractions.
Next time you visit Cedar Point, make sure to take a spin on Cedar Downs Racing Derby. Whether you’re looking to relive the golden days of amusement parks or just seeking a unique and thrilling ride, Cedar Downs offers an experience that’s as rare as it is enjoyable.
So, get yourself to the starting gates, mount your steed, and when the trumpet plays, get ready for a race like no other. It’s a can’t-miss attraction that captures the spirit and excitement of America’s Roller Coast.
