Just a mile south of Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari, Santa’s Candy Castle is a charming destination that blends rich history with a tempting array of sweet treats. Established in December 1935, this iconic attraction was the first building of Milton Harris’s visionary project, “Santa Claus Town,” making it not just a landmark in Santa Claus, Indiana, but the first themed attraction in the U.S.
Milton Harris began planning his dream in 1932, long before the theme park industry as we know it today existed. The grand opening of Santa’s Candy Castle was a significant event, drawing thousands of visitors and live radio coverage—a testament to its importance in a pre-television era. The castle stood as a beacon of Christmas spirit, and just a year later, in 1936, Harris expanded his dream with the Toy Village, where children could play with the latest toys for free.
However, the outbreak of World War II in 1941 brought tourism to a halt as the nation turned its focus to the war effort. Sadly, Harris passed away in 1950 before he could fully revive his dream, and despite efforts by various owners, Santa Claus Town eventually closed in the 1970s, remaining vacant for decades.
In 2005, a family saw the potential to bring this beloved landmark back to life. They lovingly restored Santa’s Candy Castle, reopening its doors in 2006 and rekindling the magic that Milton Harris envisioned all those years ago.
Today, Santa’s Candy Castle offers a delightful blend of history and modern indulgence. From handcrafted confectioneries to custom popcorn flavors and an impressive collection of nostalgic candies, there’s something for everyone. A room dedicated to Jelly Bellies boasts every flavor imaginable, while another caters to kids’ favorites like Pop Rocks, Nerds, and gummy treats.

As I discovered on my visit, the castle’s famous Frozen Hot Chocolate is hard to resist, and the sheer variety of treats—from old-fashioned sweets to decadent handmade chocolates—makes it a paradise for candy lovers.
Open seasonally from May through December, Santa’s Candy Castle is a must-visit for anyone heading to Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari. Whether you’re drawn by the history, the sweet treats, or simply the festive atmosphere, this castle promises to leave you with memories as sweet as the candy itself.
