When it comes to classic wooden roller coasters, few parks in America do it quite like Knoebels Amusement Resort in Elysburg, Pennsylvania. The family-owned park is known for its free admission, nostalgic charm, and a trio of wooden coasters that each offer something completely different — Phoenix, Twister, and Flying Turns.

Ask any roller coaster enthusiast which one is best, and you’re bound to start a friendly debate.

Phoenix: A Legendary Airtime Machine

If there’s one ride that defines Knoebels, it’s Phoenix. Originally built in 1947 as The Rocket in Texas and later resurrected at Knoebels in 1985, Phoenix has earned worldwide acclaim as one of the best wooden roller coasters ever built.

So what gives it that status? Airtime — and lots of it. The coaster’s vintage buzz-bar restraints give riders a true sense of freedom as they float over each hill. Smooth, fast, and packed with airtime moments from start to finish, Phoenix is often described as pure joy on rails. For the full experience, enthusiasts recommend sitting in the back row, where every dip feels like you’re flying out of your seat.

Twister: Wild, Untamed Energy

While Phoenix feels like an exhilarating dance through the air, Twister is a full-on storm. This intense wooden coaster takes inspiration from the legendary Mr. Twister that once stood at Denver’s Elitch Gardens. It features a rare split lift hill, a towering double helix, and relentless lateral G-forces that hurl riders from side to side.

Some fans love its wild, untamed energy — others find it a bit rough. But that’s part of its charm. Twister is old-school wooden coaster intensity at its finest, delivering a ride that’s as thrilling as it is unpredictable.

Flying Turns: A One-of-a-Kind Throwback

Then there’s Flying Turns — a ride so unique it doesn’t even have traditional tracks. Modeled after 1930s wooden bobsled coasters, this rare creation took nearly a decade to complete, finally opening in 2013.

Instead of rails, riders glide through a curving wooden trough, banking and weaving as if piloting a vintage airplane or motorcycle. It’s smooth, graceful, and much tamer than Knoebels’ other wooden coasters — making it a perfect pick for families or those easing into coaster thrills. The only drawback? Because it runs only a few cars at a time, Flying Turns can mean a longer wait on busy days.

So Which Ride Wins?

There’s no clear-cut answer — and that’s exactly what makes Knoebels so special. If you’re after airtime and classic coaster magic, Phoenix reigns supreme. If you crave intensity and chaos, Twister delivers. And if you want something truly different, Flying Turns offers an experience you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

In the end, the best wooden coaster at Knoebels isn’t about rankings or records — it’s about that perfect mix of thrill and nostalgia that keeps you coming back for one more ride.
