I’m excited to kick off a brand-new feature on Theme Parks By Don — the TPBD Mailbag! Each week, I’ll be answering your questions about theme parks, roller coasters, and attractions, giving you a behind-the-scenes look and a front-row seat to the conversation. This is your chance to get your questions featured, share your curiosity, and hear insights from someone who’s spent decades involved in the theme park industry.

In this edition, I’m covering a variety of questions — from Disney Parks vs. Universal, to must-visit family-friendly destinations like Dollywood and Holiday World, hidden gems, adorable new park areas, and updates from parks like The Beast and Kings Island.

Whether you’re planning next year’s passes or just love hearing behind-the-scenes stories, there’s something here for every theme park fan.

Let’s dive in and see what TPBD readers had on their minds this week.

Pam — Bowling Green, OH

Are you more of a Disney Parks fan or a Universal fan?

Definitely Disney Parks for me, and if I had to pick a favorite, it’s the Magic Kingdom. There’s just something about that park — the classic rides like The Haunted Mansion, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, The Barnstormer, Pirates of the Caribbean, Space Mountain, Peter Pan’s Flight, Walt Disney World Railroad, the atmosphere, and the way it captures the magic for guests of all ages.

Jennifer — Loveland, OH

Don, your stories on Theme Parks By Don and your social media posts about Dollywood and Holiday World convinced me to take my family to these parks. Now I’m thinking about getting 2026 passes for us. Do you have any other gems like Dollywood and Holiday World that you’d recommend?

If you loved Dollywood and Holiday World, I think you’ll really enjoy Kennywood, Knoebels, Hersheypark, and Waldameer in Pennsylvania. Each of these parks has its own unique charm and personality, making them perfect for family adventures. They’re the kind of places where everyone — kids and adults alike — can make some great memories.

Dan — Villa Hills, KY

The new Tower Topics online store looks fantastic! So how much longer do you think it’ll be before Kings Island finally admits the podcast exists and that it actually has a ton of fans?

Oh, I’m sure it’s only a matter of time! Once a few more guests stroll through the turnstiles rocking Tower Topics shirts, they’ll realize it’s not just a fan podcast… it’s a fashion movement!

Carolyn — Detroit, MI

Hi Don, I just read your recent article on Theme Parks By Don about Dollywood’s new Candy Corn Country, and it looks absolutely adorable! Is it really as cute as it seems?

Absolutely! Candy Corn Country is pure fall magic — giant candy corn, bright colors, little whimsical touches everywhere. It’s exactly as adorable as it looks. Maybe more.

Dennis — Toledo, OH

With Selim Bassoul and Daniel J. Hanrahan stepping down, and Marilyn Spiegel taking over as Chair, what do you think this means for Six Flags’ future?

It’s a pivotal moment for Six Flags. Marilyn Spiegel’s extensive experience in hospitality and guest experience positions her well to steer the company toward a more guest-focused strategy. The addition of Jonathan Brudnick from Sachem Head to the board signals a potential shift towards more strategic oversight and operational improvements. These changes could be the catalyst Six Flags needs to enhance its brand and operational efficiency.

Carter — Morrow, OH

Hey Don, I saw that The Beast won’t be running during the bonus weekend on November 8-9. Does that mean there’s more track work happening over the winter?

Yes! The Beast is continuing to get more TLC over the off-season. I really appreciate the care Kings Island puts into its wooden coasters to preserve them for future generations to enjoy.

Adam — Pittsburgh, PA

Don, when you put together your top 10 wooden roller coasters, what goes into your rankings?

For me, it’s all about balancing the timeless charm of the classics with the thrills of modern engineering. My top 10 list highlights coasters that honor roller coaster history while still delivering unforgettable rides — whether that’s airtime, smoothness, terrain-hugging twists, or a ride that’s deeply connected to the park’s story. Each one has something that makes it truly stand out.

Liam — Grove City, OH

I’m thinking of joining the American Coaster Enthusiasts. Tell me, why should I?

If you see roller coasters as more than just rides, ACE is the perfect fit. It’s more than a club—it’s a community. Founded in 1978, American Coaster Enthusiasts is the world’s largest coaster enthusiast organization, with over 7,000 members who share a deep love for amusement parks and the thrills they deliver. ACE events are where strangers quickly become friends, all bonded by the joy of reliving your favorite rides and chasing the next great coaster adventure.
