In an exciting announcement, the National Roller Coaster Museum & Archives (NRCMA) has proudly shared the acquisition of a fully restored Ottaway Steam Locomotive and passenger cars from Chance Rides in Wichita, Kansas. Although not a roller coaster, this rare addition significantly enriches the NRCMA’s collection, highlighting its commitment to preserving diverse facets of amusement park history.

Jeff Novotny, President of the NRCMA Board of Directors, expressed excitement about safeguarding this unique piece of history. “We look forward to preserving and maintaining this special part of amusement park history for years to come,” he shared.

The significance of this donation extends beyond the locomotive itself. Dick Chance, CEO of Chance Rides, reflected on his family’s connection to Ottaway trains, stating, “To restore and donate this piece of our family history, knowing it will be appreciated for generations, is truly special.”

Ottaway Locomotives, precursors to Chance’s renowned C.P. Huntington miniature trains, undeniably played a vital role in the industry’s evolution. Although there are no immediate plans to operate the locomotive as an attraction, it will be displayed “in place” with the help of a compressed air conversion, skillfully executed by Dick Chance.

As the museum integrates this unique piece into its master plan, featuring interactive exhibits and historic ride vehicles, construction continues at its main facility in Plainview, Texas. The NRCMA relies on the generosity of industry enthusiasts and facilities to fulfill its mission. Donations can be made online at rollercoastermuseum.org or by mailing the NRCMA at P.O. Box 5424, Arlington, Texas 76005.

Lastly, the National Roller Coaster Museum & Archives, an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is dedicated to safeguarding historic roller coasters and amusement park artifacts. Dependent on contributions from both fans and facilities, the NRCMA strives to document, archive, and preserve the rich history of the amusement park industry.
