The wait is finally over for roller coaster enthusiasts. Cedar Point and Zamperla revealed the Lightning train for the reimagined Top Thrill 2 roller coaster set to debut in 2024 at the annual IAAPA trade show Tuesday in Orlando.
In 2016, Zamperla strategically invested in roller coasters during its 50th-anniversary celebration. Six years later, Top Thrill 2 stands as a symbol of the company’s progress, marking a milestone achieved through hard work and substantial investments in technology and personnel, according to Antonio Zamperla, CEO of Zamperla Group.

The Roller Coaster Business Unit, formed after this strategic shift, has been dedicated to researching new technologies, materials, and technical features. Collaborations with prestigious entities like the University of Padua and the University of Perugia have played a crucial role in this ongoing work.
Alberto Ferri, Roller Coaster Division Director, highlights the partnership with these universities, stating that the University of Padua and Perugia contributed 500 hours to studying new materials and technologies, significantly contributing to the innovation process.
Top Thrill 2 reflects the long-standing collaboration between Zamperla and Cedar Point. Starting as a manufacturer of kiddie rides, Zamperla has grown over three decades, providing various attractions to Cedar Fair, the parent company of Cedar Point.
Zamperla’s growth into larger rides, such as the Disk’O and the Twister Freeform coaster, solidified its position as the attraction industry’s only “One Stop Shop.” Clients worldwide now rely on Zamperla for every type of attraction, from family rides to record-breaking coasters.
Tony Clark, Director of Communications at Cedar Point, expresses trust in Zamperla, stating that for two consecutive years, they’ve relied on the company to bring world-class ride experiences to Cedar Point.
Top Thrill 2, a benchmark in roller coaster technology and design, showcases Zamperla’s commitment to reducing the total cost of ownership through an aluminum-milled chassis. The coaster also features cutting-edge construction with carbon fiber elements, and Zamperla collaborated with a leading company to introduce these materials to coaster design.
The design process involved several iterations of wheel sizes and linings, resulting in a 530 mm wheel, one of the largest in the industry.
Adam Sandy, Zamperla’s Roller Coaster Sales & Marketing Director, describes the Top Thrill 2 project as redefining how large roller coaster projects can be successful, emphasizing the collaborative success between Zamperla and Cedar Point.
Mike Maney, Vice President of Maintenance and Construction at Cedar Point, describes the experience of working with Zamperla on this challenging project as rewarding, highlighting the technological advancements and additional features incorporated into Top Thrill 2.
Zamperla’s dedication to theming, innovation, and artistic craftsmanship sets the company apart, with Top Thrill 2 showcasing cutting-edge materials, high-performance racing-inspired vehicles, and record-breaking thrills. The coaster stands as a testament to why parks of all sizes turn to Zamperla to transform their dreams into reality.
Lastly, I’m excited about Top Thrill 2 and cannot wait to experience a ride on the attraction. What are your thoughts?
