Cedar Point’s 2024 season is abuzz with excitement over the reimagined Top Thrill 2 roller coaster, but amidst the spotlight, another gem marks a milestone—Blue Streak, as it joyously celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.

My inaugural Cedar Point experience in 1987 revolved around Blue Streak, a wooden roller coaster that had already secured its status as a star attraction. Over the years, it has retained its allure, earning a permanent spot on my must-ride list.

Designed by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, Blue Streak made its debut on May 23, 1964.

Blue Streak, designed by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, made its debut on May 23, 1964. As the oldest operating roller coaster at Cedar Point and the sole wooden coaster in the park, it holds a special place in the hearts of enthusiasts. Recognized globally, it achieved the 27th position among the world’s top wooden roller coasters in the 2013 Golden Ticket Awards and earned a Coaster Landmark designation from American Coaster Enthusiasts in 2022.

The coaster’s origin traces back to the aftermath of Cyclone’s removal in 1951. Cedar Point, after a decade-long hiatus in major coaster additions, enlisted the expertise of Philadelphia Toboggan Company in 1964. Blue Streak’s success heralded a roller coaster renaissance at Cedar Point, paving the way for subsequent iconic rides like Cedar Creek Mine Ride, Corkscrew, Gemini, and Wilderness Run.

With its classic “out-and-back” layout, Blue Streak mirrors the spirit of Sandusky High School’s athletic nickname, “The Blue Streaks.” A $200,000 investment by Cedar Point brought this coaster to life, creating a perennial favorite for visitors to the Sandusky amusement park.

Ascending 78 feet before hurtling down a 72-foot drop at a 45-degree angle, Blue Streak reaches a maximum speed of 40 miles per hour. The ride unfolds with a succession of hills, culminating in a memorable 180-degree turn. Its finale, a series of medium-sized hills, concludes with a final brake run before returning to the station.

The ACE Roller Coaster Landmark designation, bestowed upon Blue Streak during Coaster Con 44 in 2022, attests to its historic significance. Originally adorned in natural wood hues, the coaster adopted its iconic blue paint scheme in 1968, adding a vibrant touch to its enduring charm.

Blue Streak, with its rich history, thrilling layout, and enduring popularity, stands as a testament to Cedar Point’s commitment to delivering timeless amusement park experiences. Here’s to 60 years of exhilarating rides and countless memories on this enduring coaster.
