There are theme parks you add to an Orlando vacation, and then there are theme parks that give you a reason to book the vacation.

Universal Epic Universe falls into the latter category.

Universal Orlando Resort’s newest theme park offers several attractions capable of becoming highlights of a Florida getaway. Stardust Racers delivers the high-speed thrills coaster fans crave, while Hiccup’s Wing Gliders combine family-friendly excitement with the immersive world of How to Train Your Dragon.

But after experiencing Epic Universe, one attraction in particular stands out for me: Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge.

Stepping Into the Game

Located inside SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge succeeds at something every great theme park attraction strives to do: transport you somewhere you couldn’t experience at home.

That begins before you ever board.

Guests make their way through Bowser’s Castle, surrounded by oversized sets, familiar characters and details that make it feel as though you’ve stepped directly into a Mario game. 

Even the queue becomes part of the experience, building anticipation for the race ahead.

Before boarding, riders receive a Mario-themed visor. Once seated in a four-person kart, an augmented-reality lens attaches to it, adding digital racers, targets and other elements to the physical environments surrounding you.

Then it’s time to play.

More Than a Ride

Rather than simply watching scenes pass by you become part of the competition. Riders steer, aim at opponents, fire Koopa shells and collect coins while helping Team Mario battle Team Bowser for the Golden Cup.

The course travels through environments inspired by the Mario Kart games, including underwater settings, spooky surroundings and one of the franchise’s most recognizable locations: Rainbow Road.

There’s a lot happening during the experience, and that gives Mario Kart something else I appreciate in a theme park attraction: re-ride value. Once you understand how the game works, it’s tempting to climb aboard again and try to improve your score.

For anyone who has spent years playing Mario Kart, seeing those familiar worlds brought to life adds another dimension to the experience.

Epic Universe Is More Than One Attraction

As much as I enjoyed Mario Kart, the strength of Epic Universe is its variety.

You can race across the sky on Stardust Racers, soar through the Isle of Berk aboard Hiccup’s Wing Gliders and then exchange traditional ride thrills for an interactive battle inside Bowser’s Castle. Each offers something completely different.

That variety is what makes Epic Universe feel less like another park to squeeze into a crowded Orlando itinerary and more like a destination that deserves its own day—or more—to explore.

And if you’re visiting for the first time, don’t overlook Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge simply because it isn’t the tallest or fastest attraction in the park.

Sometimes the rides you remember most aren’t about height, speed or inversions. They’re about putting you somewhere you never expected to go.

In this case, it’s behind the wheel of a Mario Kart, racing Team Bowser for the Golden Cup.
