On May 28, 1982, Kings Island introduced a groundbreaking attraction that would thrill coaster enthusiasts and redefine the amusement park experience. The backward Racer made its public debut as the first and only wooden roller coaster in the world where a train traveled its entire track in reverse.
The brainchild of Tom Nowlin, Kings Island’s marketing director at the time, the backward Racer concept faced initial skepticism. At a press event on May 26, Nowlin recalled the mixed reactions from the management of Kings Island and Taft Broadcasting, the park’s owner. “The biggest concern initially was safety. Others just didn’t think it was possible,” Nowlin said. “But actually, it’s like picking up a model train and turning it around.”

Despite the doubts, a successful test run during Memorial Day weekend proved the backward Racer’s potential. With the south side trains running backward and the north side trains continuing forward, the ride provided a unique dual experience for visitors.
Initially intended to be a one-season novelty, the backward Racer captivated guests and became a staple of the park for 26 seasons. It wasn’t until 2008 that The Racer was returned to its original format, with the south side running forward again, now designated as the Red Racer, and the north side as the Blue Racer.
For coaster aficionados, the backward Racer offered a new thrill. Unlike the disorienting loops and corkscrews of steel coasters, the backward Racer provided a distinct kind of excitement. Riders experienced the 3,415-foot-long track in reverse, reaching speeds of over 60 mph.
Although the backward ride was less intense than its forward counterpart, it delivered a unique sensation. It was a giggler. It still had its thrilling moments but the thrill was sort of after the fact. You see the hill leaving you behind but it wasn’t quite as scary because you couldn’t anticipate as much.
The backward Racer’s legacy lives on in the memories of those who experienced its unique thrills. It stood as a testament to innovation and daring in the world of amusement parks, offering a fresh perspective on roller coaster excitement.
Today, we remember the backward Racer not just as a ride, but as a bold experiment that captured the imagination and delivered joy to countless visitors at Kings Island.
