For theme park fans, Joe Rohde is one of the creative minds whose work can be experienced rather than simply observed.
The Disney Legend and former Walt Disney Imagineer spent four decades helping turn ambitious ideas into physical places and attractions, most notably playing a major role in the creation of Disney’s Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
Rohde’s influence extends well beyond Animal Kingdom. His Disney career included work on EPCOT’s Mexico Pavilion, Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Hawaii, and Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! at Disney California Adventure.
Now, Rohde is turning his attention to the creative process itself.
His new book, Floating Mountains: The Art of Imagining the Impossible, arrives Sept. 8, offering an exploration of imagination, innovation and the lessons Rohde has learned about transforming creative visions into reality.
The subject makes Rohde particularly interesting because his career demonstrates that theme park creativity involves much more than dreaming up rides. Creating immersive environments requires storytelling, architecture, art, engineering, research and countless people working together to solve problems—all while making the finished experience feel effortless to the guest.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom may be the clearest example. Millions of visitors walk through environments designed to transport them somewhere else, often without considering the creative decisions behind what they see, hear and experience. Rohde was one of the people responsible for making that illusion convincing.
Although he retired from Walt Disney Imagineering in 2021, Rohde has continued sharing his thoughts about creativity, design and the importance of challenging conventional thinking.
As someone interested in both Disney and the creative process behind great theme park experiences, Floating Mountains immediately caught my attention. I plan to buy the book when it becomes available Sept. 8.
For anyone fascinated by how seemingly impossible ideas become experiences that millions of people can walk into and explore, Rohde’s perspective should make Floating Mountains an intriguing addition to the bookshelf.
