At Kings Island in Mason, Ohio, stands The Beast—a marvel of wooden engineering that has thrilled riders for 45 years.
Amidst its nearly 7,400-foot-long structure lies a hidden gem: the tunnels, each a portal to a world of exhilarating darkness and adventure.

When Al Collins and Jeff Gramke designed The Beast, tunnels were an unforeseen twist in their plans. Yet, as they surveyed the undulating terrain, inspiration struck—why reach for the sky when they could delve into the earth? And so, nestled within the landscape, the first tunnels emerged, encasing the base of the first drop in thrilling darkness.
As the inaugural season of The Beast unfolded in 1979, riders were plunged into the depths, hurtling through the darkness of the initial tunnel with hearts pounding and screams echoing.
But it was the whispers of excitement that spurred Collins and Gramke to action. With a stroke of brilliance, after the debut season of The Beast, they extended the two existing mid-course tunnels, weaving them into a single, serpentine passage of darkness.
No longer mere breaks in the light, the mid-course tunnel became a seamless journey through the depths of exhilaration. Riders hurtled through the darkness, hearts pounding, as the coaster’s relentless momentum carried them onwards.
And then, just when they thought they had braved the darkest depths, the 540-degree helix finale awaited, enveloped in its own shroud of mystery.
Ascending into the dizzying spiral, riders were ensnared in a whirlwind of anticipation, each twist and turn amplifying the thrill of the journey. And as they emerged into the light once more, breathless but exhilarated, they knew they had experienced something truly extraordinary.
Thus, the tunnels of The Beast were not born of meticulous planning, but of intuition and innovation. They stand as a testament to the ingenuity of their creators and the insatiable hunger for adventure that pulses within every rider’s heart.
And as The Beast embarks on its 45th anniversary season, its tunnels remain as enduring symbols of the thrill-seeker’s quest for the unknown, beckoning riders to journey into the depths and emerge, transformed, into the light once more.
