Dollywood has never been afraid to make a big investment in the guest experience, but NightFlight Expedition takes that philosophy to an entirely different level.

The new attraction in Wildwood Grove cost more than $60 million, making it the largest single-attraction investment in Dollywood history. After nearly a year of anticipation, I finally had the opportunity to experience it during Friday’s media ride dedication event.

I rode it twice.

And yes, it was worth the wait. It was worth the investment. And it was absolutely incredible.

I was blown away by what Dollywood has created.

NightFlight Expedition isn’t simply another roller coaster added to an already impressive lineup. It combines four different ride experiences into one nearly five-and-a-half-minute adventure, wrapped around the kind of detailed Smoky Mountain storytelling that has become such an important part of the Dollywood experience.

The adventure begins before you ever board

One of my favorite parts of NightFlight Expedition was the storytelling that takes place before the ride begins.

The detailed queue introduces guests to twin scientists Cora and Jasper Oakley, niece and nephew of Ned Oakley, a character guests may recognize from nearby Big Bear Mountain.

Cora and Jasper operate out of Hidden Hollow Aviation and have developed a device called the Bioluminator, which can detect and amplify bioluminescence. They attach their invention to a custom Smoky Mountain Tracker Vehicle and set out to follow the glowing roots of the Wildwood Tree in search of the mysterious Secret Lake.

It’s an elaborate setup, but it serves an important purpose: By the time you climb aboard, you understand why you’re going on this expedition.

That made a difference for me.

Rather than standing in a queue waiting for the “real” attraction to begin, I felt like the experience was already underway. Dollywood has taken the story beyond scenery surrounding a roller coaster and made it part of the reason you’re there.

Four ride experiences become one adventure

Then there’s the ride system itself, which was another of my favorite aspects of NightFlight Expedition.

Created by Dollywood, Herschend Creative Studios and Mack Rides, the attraction takes riders through four distinct experiences during a single journey.

You’ll soar on a nighttime flight over the Smokies, plunge into a whitewater rafting adventure through more than 500,000 gallons of water, climb up and over a mountain ridge and eventually splash into Secret Lake.

The custom ride vehicles work with multimedia projections, onboard and offboard audio, lighting effects and physical environments to continually change what you’re experiencing.

Mack Rides’ technology behind NightFlight Expedition was recognized with Amusement Today’s 2025 Golden Ticket Award for Best New Innovation.

Experiencing that technology firsthand was one of the things that impressed me most. There were moments when I found myself thinking less about how the attraction worked and more about where it was taking me next.

That’s when an innovative ride system becomes more than a technological showcase. It becomes part of the storytelling.

This isn’t about building the tallest or fastest coaster

NightFlight Expedition is Dollywood’s 11th roller coaster, but judging it simply against traditional coaster statistics misses the point.

This isn’t a ride trying to win the height, speed or inversion race.

It’s trying to do something different.

NightFlight Expedition is housed inside a 44,000-square-foot, temperature-controlled building and has a 39-inch height requirement, making the experience accessible to a broad range of families. Being indoors also gives Dollywood an attraction that can operate independently of much of the unpredictable Smoky Mountain weather.

For Dollywood Parks & Resorts President Eugene Naughton, the attraction represents an opportunity to rethink what a family ride can be.

“NightFlight Expedition represents a defining moment not only for Dollywood but for the theme park industry as a whole,” Naughton said, describing the combination of storytelling, technology and four distinct ride experiences.

After riding it twice, I understand why Dollywood has such high expectations for it.

A ride you can only experience at Dollywood

Perhaps the most important thing NightFlight Expedition has going for it is something that can’t be measured by height, speed or even its $60 million-plus price tag.

It’s uniquely Dollywood.

The story of the Smoky Mountains, the Wildwood Tree, Cora and Jasper and the search for Secret Lake are connected to this park and this place.

Dolly Parton has said she hopes the attraction allows families to experience the wonder and beauty she remembers from growing up in the Smokies, including the stories of what happens in the mountains after the sun goes down.

That sense of place matters.

Theme park fans can find roller coasters, dark rides and water attractions throughout the country. NightFlight Expedition takes pieces of those experiences and brings them together into something specifically created for Dollywood.

You can’t ride another version at another theme park.

For travelers, that makes NightFlight Expedition more than simply Dollywood’s newest attraction. It gives you another reason to plan a trip specifically to Pigeon Forge.

NightFlight Expedition gives Wildwood Grove another centerpiece

The attraction also expands Wildwood Grove, which opened in 2019 and has become one of Dollywood’s signature areas.

The land has won the Golden Ticket Award for Best Theme Park Kids’ Area six times, and NightFlight Expedition builds on its existing mythology rather than simply dropping a new roller coaster into the area.

That’s especially noticeable because the attraction’s search for Secret Lake connects directly to the Wildwood Tree and the mystery behind the glowing colors of its canopy.

It’s another example of why NightFlight Expedition feels less like an addition to Dollywood and more like an expansion of its world.

There’s more time to experience it before summer ends

Travelers hoping to experience NightFlight Expedition before summer winds down will have some additional time in the park.

From now through Sept. 13, Dollywood is scheduled to operate from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Dollywood’s Splash Country also remains open on select operating dates through Sept. 20.

Then the park transitions into one of its best times of the year to visit.

Dollywood’s Harvest Festival runs Sept. 14 through Oct. 31, bringing thousands of carved pumpkins, live entertainment and Great Pumpkin LumiNights to the park.

Smoky Mountain Christmas follows from Nov. 6 through Jan. 3, 2027, with 6 million lights and holiday entertainment transforming Dollywood for the Christmas season.

That means NightFlight Expedition won’t simply be a summer attraction. Guests will get to experience it against several very different Dollywood backdrops throughout its first year.

NightFlight Expedition gives travelers a new reason to visit Dollywood

After following NightFlight Expedition since it was announced last September, I went into the media ride dedication event with high expectations.

Two rides later, those expectations had been exceeded.

I loved the ride system, the way the storytelling begins in the queue and the feeling of not knowing exactly what kind of experience was coming next. But what impressed me most was that Dollywood didn’t spend more than $60 million simply trying to build a bigger version of something guests have already experienced somewhere else.

It created something entirely its own.

I heard the word “incredible” more than once as guests stepped off NightFlight Expedition during the dedication event. That’s the same word I’d use.

NightFlight Expedition is ambitious, immersive and unmistakably Dollywood. If you want to experience this one-of-a-kind expedition for yourself, it’s another compelling reason to make a trip to the Smoky Mountains.
