The United States is home to hundreds of zoological parks—more than 200 of them accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums—and each offers a unique window into the animal kingdom. 

Now, a panel of experts has narrowed the field, nominating the top 20 zoos in the country for USA Today’s annual “Best Zoo” readers’ choice awards. And among those elite contenders? The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden.

One of the oldest zoos in the nation, the Cincinnati Zoo has long balanced entertainment with education and conservation. Visitors come face-to-face with animals from around the globe, from cheetahs sprinting at breathtaking speeds to meerkats darting and standing sentinel in their bustling habitats. A major crowd-pleaser is the hippo habitat, where guests can watch hippos glide underwater—including Fiona, the zoo’s world-famous resident who has helped shine a spotlight on hippo conservation.

The zoo’s immersive exhibits are a big part of what earned it national recognition. Night Hunters flips the script on traditional zoo visits, placing guests in a multi-sensory environment where nocturnal predators take center stage. Meanwhile, Manatee Springs offers a closer look at Florida manatees while emphasizing the importance of long-term conservation efforts to protect these gentle giants in the wild.

Voting for the “Best Zoo” honor is now open, with readers able to cast one vote per day for their favorite pick. Voting runs through Monday, March 9 at noon ET, and the top 10 winners will be announced on Wednesday, March 18.
